University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire

Foundation Scholarships

Fredrich, Michael F. Science

AMOUNT: One award at $6,500
AVAILABLE: Available
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
This is an interdisciplinary scholarship created to support undergraduate students who have academic promise, but who may not necessarily be the best student in terms of grade point average. The scholarship should be open for consideration each year, but could be renewable to the same student twice. Students who wish to be considered for renewal must submit a new application. The scholarship recipient must be a declared major in one of the academic disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer science, materials science, geology, geography or physics and astronomy; have financial need; and be a sophomore or above who shows academic promise. Academic promise is defined as clear potential to succeed in a relevant graduate or professional program following graduation and demonstrated accomplishments, leadership and creativity in chosen field.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The Chair/Director of each department/program should make sure the scholarship opportunity is announced to their majors by mid-February. Application forms should be made available in the department/program office or sent via email from the department/program office. Department/program offices may also make the application available on their website.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Application form must be returned to the department/program office of the student’s major by the third Friday in March.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The Chair/Director of each department/program will select up to two finalists (based on the eligibility criteria above) from all of the applications received in their department/program. The A&S Dean’s Office will be notified of the finalists from each department/program by April 1st (a copy of the finalists’ application forms should be forwarded to the Dean’s Office). A packet of departmental/program finalists’ applications (up to two from each department/program) should be sent to each of the Chairs/Directors for final ranking. The College of Arts & Sciences Scholarship Committee (which will be composed of the Chairs/Directors of all the departments/programs involved, and chaired by the Dean of Arts & Sciences or the Dean’s designee) will meet in early April to select the overall finalist for the award. Over time, the scholarship recipient should rotate among the disciplines, but a precise rigidity is not necessary. The award is to go to one student and should not be divided between two students.
SELECTION DEADLINE:
Early April. The announcement of the recipient should coincide with UWEC’s Honors Week. The recipient should be recognized at the Honors Week event of the department/program of their major.
NOTIFICATION:
The Dean will notify the recipient by letter and complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Recipient should write a letter of thanks and deliver it to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Office, S-214.
