ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
The John and Hilde Bacharach Scholarships are available as follows: one $400 award for a German major or minor in the Department of Foreign Languages; and one $400 award to a student majoring in Nursing with an emphasis on community health or public health in order to foster the optimum achievement of health, safety and well being for the general or specific populations. Financial need may be a consideration. Scholarship recipients must attend UW-Eau Claire and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered for the respective award. The Nursing award can be given to a student to acquire material needed to achieve a class-related project in the area of community health. Or a student involved in student/faculty collaborative research, or for a student to attend a professional conference, seminar or other educational opportunity in the public health field.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
For Foreign Languages, applications are available at the Foreign Languages Department Office. A signed hard copy of the completed application must be submitted to the Foreign Language Departments Chair’s office. For Nursing, Application Forms: Students who are admitted to the nursing program at UW-Eau Claire will receive an email in late February/early March when the scholarship application is ready and available. The email will include the path to the online application forms located on the Department of Nursing website – www.uwec.edu/CONHS/students/nursscholarships.htm. Part One is filled online and submitted electronically. Part Two (the essay and activities form) is filled online and printed off, signed and submitted to the Dean’s Assistant Office, Nursing 103, by the deadline. The essay must address the eligibility criteria for each of the scholarships that you are applying for. Only one written essay of no more than 300 words will be accepted.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Foreign Languages – March 30. Nursing – Second Monday in March.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Selection will be made by the respective scholarship committees
SELECTION DEADLINE:
Determined by the department/school. The Nursing recipient will be selected before the Nursing scholarship dinner.
NOTIFICATION:
The Chair of Foreign Languages and the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will notify the respective recipient by letter. Each department will also complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Dr. Hilde Bacharach began her teaching career at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as a faculty assistant in German in 1962 and concluded her career as a Professor Emerita in Foreign Languages in 1985. John Bacharach was the director of the City-County Health Department in Eau Claire from 1960 to 1987. He taught the first classes in public health at UW-Eau Claire and offered practical experiences for nursing students at the City-County Health Department.
