AMOUNT: $350 AVAILABLE: Annually ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The applicant must have junior or senior standing at the beginning of the upcoming fall semester and be majoring in biology with an academic emphasis in any area of invertebrate biology. The applicant must have demonstrated strong scholastic achievement and performance. Financial need is to be considered but is not necessarily a basis for selection. A student may not receive this scholarship more than once. If there is no qualified applicant for this scholarship, it should go un-awarded for that academic year and be made available for awarding the following year.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Applications materials can be found online at the Department of Biology website: www.uwec.edu/biology.APPLICATION DEADLINE: Second Monday in MarchSELECTION PROCEDURE: The Biology Scholarship Committee will make selection based upon the criteria above. The Biology Scholarship Committee has faculty representation from the major sub-disciplines of biology. Applications will be evaluated both in terms of their academic merit and their compatibility with award eligibility criteria.SELECTION DEADLINE: April 15NOTIFICATION: An award letter will be sent to the recipient by the Chair of the Department of Biology in May. The Chair will also complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office. The annual recipient will be honored at the biology department scholarship reception held in the spring.SPECIAL NOTES: Before arriving at UW-Eau Claire in 1978, Dr. Owen Marshall completed his Bachelor’s and Ph.D. in Biology. He also had served three years in the Peace Corps in Ecuador where he taught science and created a science museum. At UW-Eau Claire Dr. Marshall taught embryology, invertebrate biology, and introductory biology. He was greatly loved by students as an outstanding teacher and advisor. He was well known as an environmentalist and outdoorsman. In the fall, 1997, he led a group of students who studied in Costa Rica. Dr. Marshall was a member of the University Senate. He died in February, 2000. He wanted to sponsor a scholarship in biology so his family, students, alumni and friends honor his memory with this scholarship. The recipient should send a thank you letter to Mrs. Marshall in care of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Office S-214 at the time the award is made. |
