AMOUNT: Two awards at variable amount for $1,800.00 total
AVAILABLE: Annually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
One semester of study at the Universidad de Valladolid; 90 credits of course work completed; cumulative GPA of 3.00; GPA in Spanish courses of 3.50; and Spanish major or minor.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Application forms are available in the Department of Foreign Languages Office. The form, a letter of recommendation from one faculty member outside the Department of Foreign Languages, and a biographical essay of 3-5 pages in Spanish which describes the value of the Valladolid or Oviedo experience, campus activities, and plans for the future.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: First Tuesday in March
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Two Spanish faculty members and a representative of the Hoff family, who is also a teacher of Spanish, will review the applications and interview the applicants. This committee's decision will be forwarded to the Department Chair for transmittal to Financial Aid and the Foundation. This scholarship award will be applied to the recipient’s UW-Eau Claire tuition in the next academic term.
SELECTION DEADLINE: May 1
NOTIFICATION:
Recipients will be notified by letter. The Chair will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Dr. Roma Hoff joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1965. In 1985 the Wisconsin Association of Foreign Language Teachers named her the state’s Distinguished Foreign Language Educator. In 1988 she received the American Council of Teaching of Foreign Language Textbook Award for Building Community Interest in Foreign Language Education. She was the 1990 awardee of the AATSP award. In 1991 she was named recipient of the Founder’s Award by the Central States Conference on Foreign Languages. In 1993 alumni chose her to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award. During her tenure, she guided 22 international travel seminars and directed two summer graduate Spanish Institutes. She was the cultural advisor for five groups of Central American Programs for Undergraduate Scholars. She became an honorary Blugold in 2001. Dr. Roma Hoff was known for her innovative teaching methods and was greatly beloved by students and alumni. Dr. Hoff retired in 1996. For forty years Dr. Roma and Dr. Don Hoff have been very active with the Concordia Language villages in Bemidji, MN, where the Spanish Village kitchen is named for Don and the entrance road is named for Roma. They are longtime members of the national advisory board. Dr. Roma and Dr. Don Hoff are famous for their warm, gracious hospitality and entertained many students including international students and their families in their home.
