AMOUNT: Two awards at $1,000 each, $2,000 total AVAILABLE: Available ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Two scholarships will be awarded annually. One scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Communication, with a specific emphasis on Public Communication, Communication Studies or Organizational Communication. The recipient must be enrolled full-time for at least one semester during the academic year the scholarship is received. A student must have 12 credits of CJ courses completed at the time of application and have an earned GPA of at least 3.2 in the CJ Department. Preference will be given to a student who plans on a career in Public Communication or Communication Studies or Organizational Communication or pursuing a career as a public speaker. The second scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding UW-Eau Claire student, regardless of major, who is planning on a career in Christian ministry, Christian outreach and/or Christian media work. The recipient must be enrolled full-time for at least one semester during the academic year the scholarship is received. Preference will be given to a student actively involved in Student Impact/Campus Crusade for Christ, InterVarsity, the Navigators or Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Recipient must have an earned GPA of at least 3.0.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: The applicant is required to write a letter of application, in essay form, in which all of the following points are clearly addressed in no more than two, typed double-spaced pages. The content of the letter should be organized by number according to the areas listed: 1) Extracurricular activities on campus or in the community; 2) Previous awards, recognitions and scholarships; 3) What percentage of your college expenses do you personally provide? 4) How will the Dr. Alan Zimmerman Scholarship aid your educational goals? 5) Short-term career objective; and 6) Long-term career objective. Letters of application that exceed two, double-spaced pages will not be considered, and incomplete applications will not be considered. The applicant also is required to provide the following information and attach it as a separate typed cover page: Name, student ID number, email address, local address, permanent address, telephone, major, major GPA, completed credits in major, minor, total GPA, credits in progress, completed credits and expected date of graduation. Applicant must also submit a degree audit. Applications for the scholarship to students planning a career in Christian ministry work are available from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.APPLICATION DEADLINE: First Friday in April for the communication scholarship. Late spring before academic year of award for ministry award.SELECTION PROCEDURE: The Department of Communication and Journalism Scholarship Committee will select the recipient of the communication scholarship. The scholarship committee for the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies will select the recipient of the ministry award.SELECTION DEADLINE: The communication scholarship recipients are announced mid to late April. This winner is expected to attend the Communication and Journalism Student Excellence Recognition Reception held the last day of spring classes.NOTIFICATION: The Chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism will send notification to the recipient of the communication award. The Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies shall notify the recipient of the ministry award. Each department Chair will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office for their respective recipient.SPECIAL NOTES: Recipients of the communication scholarship should submit a letter of gratitude addressed to Dr. Alan Zimmerman and should be submitted directly to the Department of Communication and Journalism program assistant. Recipients of the scholarship for students planning to enter the ministry should direct their thank-you note addressed to Dr. Alan Zimmerman in care of the Foundation Office in S- 214. In 1970, Alan Zimmerman graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a B.A. degree in speech, communication, and political science. From there he went on to earn a Master’s and Ph.D. in Speech Communication, taught at the university level for 15 years, and was awarded the “Outstanding Faculty Member” award by two different universities. In 1985, Dr. Zimmerman opened his own training, speaking, and consulting company, www.drzimmerman.com, delivering more than 3,000 programs in 49 states and 22 countries. His programs focus on such topics as self-esteem, motivation, leadership, and teamwork as he shows people how to bring out the best in themselves or others. As a CSP (Certified Speaking Professional), and as an inductee into the Speakers Hall of Fame, Dr. Zimmerman is ranked among the top 5% of all speakers worldwide. Dr. Zimmerman’s three books include: 1) The Service Payoff: How Customer Service Champions Outserve And Outlast The Competition 2) Pivot: How One Turn In Attitude Can Lead To Success 3) Brave Questions: Building Stronger Relationships By Asking All The Right Questions. Dr. Zimmerman established this scholarship fund to give back to his alma mater as he helps future UW-Eau Claire students reach their greatest potential. |
