AMOUNT: One award at $500 AVAILABLE: Available ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This award is available to an outstanding student who has been accepted into the College of Nursing and Health Sciences DNP program. Applicants must have successfully completed at least eight credits at the 800 level of coursework in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Preference given to applicants who have a history of supporting the nursing programs at UW-Eau Claire’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Evidence of support would include such activities as providing preceptorships, encouraging and supporting clinical experiences at their employment/agency, participating in UW-Eau Claire alumni and/or professional nursing organizations that support the educational mission of the nursing programs (i.e. leadership role in Sigma Theta Tau).APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application Forms: Students who are admitted to the nursing program at UW-Eau Claire will receive an email in late February/early March when the scholarship application is ready and available. The email will include the path to the online application forms. PART ONE is filled online and submitted electronically. PART TWO (the essay and activities form) is filled out online and printed off, signed and submitted to the Dean’s Assistant Office, Nursing 103, by the deadline. Only one essay can be submitted. The essay must address the eligibility criteria for each of the scholarships that they wish to apply for.APPLICATION DEADLINE: Second Monday in MarchSELECTION PROCEDURE: The Nursing Scholarship Committee will review applications and select the recipient.SELECTION DEADLINE: Prior to the Nursing scholarship dinner.NOTIFICATION: The Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will send notification to the recipient by letter. The Dean will also complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.SPECIAL NOTES: Dr. L. Elaine Wendt, professor and dean emerita of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, retired in 2008 after 25 years of teaching at UW-Eau Claire. A native of South Dakota, Dr. Wendt earned a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University, a master’s degree from New York University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland-Baltimore. She began teaching at UW-Eau Claire in 1969; but also worked for a time in nursing in New York City and in Maryland and taught briefly at UW-Milwaukee. She was Chair of the Department of Family Health Nursing at UW-Eau Claire before becoming Interim Associate Dean of the School of Nursing in 2002, Associate Dean in 2003, and Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2004. She was instrumental in helping the College obtain the entitlement to plan the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program and in establishing the nursing skills laboratory simulation activities. Additionally, Dr. Wendt is the original founder of the annual Nursing Alumni Walk held during Homecoming weekend. Dr. Wendt has long been an advocate of increasing access to the nursing profession and especially of supporting nurse educators.
