Katherine and Bruce Rhoades in memory of their mothers who had such profound impacts on both their lives. This scholarship honors Theresa Eleanor Williams, Katherine’s mother who died in 2001, and Bruce’s mother, Helen Marie Rhoades, who died in 2002. This scholarship recognizes the love of learning and belief in the power of education that Theresa and Helen perpetuated in their children, all of whom achieved the highest degree in their fields – 1 M.D. and two Ph.D.s. Theresa, who worked in the office of the Superintendent of Schools in Lincoln, NE, attended classes at the University of Nebraska as a non-traditional student, to prepare successfully for certification as a professional secretary. Helen graduated from Marian College’s Teacher Education Program in Fond du Lac, WI, and subsequently taught in a one-room rural schoolhouse. Dr. Katherine Rhoades was the associate dean of education for UW-Eau Claire at the time she established the fund. She later became Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. She retired from UW-Eau Claire as Dean Emerita in 2007 but then returned to the university to serve as the Director of Women’s Studies from 2008-2010. Dr. Bruce Rhoades retired as a psychiatrist after working many years for the Marshfield Clinic. He continues to volunteer for several non-profit organizations. The recipient should write a letter of thanks to Drs. Bruce and Katherine Rhoades and forward to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Office, S-214. |
