ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
A major in one or more of the natural sciences, including biology, chemistry, geography (environmental, physical or land resource emphasis), geology, physics, environmental and public health. Junior at time of application and senior status at time of utilization. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application. An essay to include career goals and how this scholarship will support those goals will be a part of the application. A plus will be employment, research, or volunteer activities that support career goals and work in the environmental science area.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The Chair of each department should make sure the scholarship opportunity is announced to their majors by mid-February. Application forms should be made available (in the Department Office, sent via e-mail, on the web, etc.). Students must complete and return the application form to the departmental Office of the student’s major by the second Friday in March. For ENPH: An email will be sent to all declared majors in February when the scholarship application from is ready and available. The email will include the path to the Online Application form. The form must be filled out and submitted online AND a hard copy must be printed off and submitted to the Dean’s Assistant Office, Nursing 101 by March 3. Transcripts are required.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The Chair of each department will select up to two finalists (based on the eligibility criteria above) from all of the applications received in their department. The A&S Dean’s Office will be notified of the finalists from each department by April 1st (a copy of the finalists’ application form should be forwarded to the Dean’s office). A packet of departmental finalists’ applications (up to two from each department) will be sent to professor emeritus, Dr. Marcus Fay. He will make the final selection, consulting with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (or the Dean’s representative) as necessary. In the event he is unable to select the recipient, the College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Committee will do so.
SELECTION DEADLINE: Early April. The announcement of
the recipient should coincide with UWEC’s Honors Week. The recipient should be recognized at the Honors Week event of the department of their major.
NOTIFICATION:
The Dean will notify the recipient by letter and complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The recipient should send a letter of appreciation to Dr. Jerry Smith in care of the Foundation Office, S-214.
