For over 30 years, Jim Vance dedicated his career to ensuring educational opportunities for students at two University of Wisconsin campuses. At both UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire, Jim developed programs designed to attract diverse students to university education and supported their success. Jim championed the importance of diversifying college campuses before it became a top priority in education. The cornerstone for his programs and initiatives was his ability to increase financial resources and expand student scholarships. These achievements resulted from his holistic, integrated approach to multicultural education. A colleague wrote, “Jim believed in the transforming power of education and worked tirelessly to make it a reality.” Students describe Jim as a soft-spoken man with an enormous heart. He is remembered for his dedication, passion, commitment and vision. They saw him as a great friend, role model, leader, big brother and mentor. He was someone they could count on when most needed. As students recall their college experiences, they often praise Jim Vance as the force who guided them to levels of achievement that often surpassed their own expectations. He was an educator who touched the lives of many. The recipient should send a thank-you note to Jesse Dixon in the Multicultural Affairs Office. |
