AVAILABLE: Annually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
This fund will award a scholarship for an Spanish Major, with preference given for a student majoring in Spanish Education, who qualifies based on the following criteria: junior or senior with acceptance into the Spanish program; must be a full time student in good academic standing; and a slight preference is given for financial need if all things are equal between two finalists.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
An application form is available from the Foreign Languages Department. It must be completed and returned to the Foreign Language Department.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 30
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The Foreign Language Department’s Scholarship Committee will select a recipient based on the criteria above.
SELECTION DEADLINE:
Determination of the award will be made by the Foreign Language Department in May.
NOTIFICATION:
The Foreign Languages Department will notify the recipient.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Josette T. Migawa, faculty emeritus, taught for 20 years at UW-Eau Claire. She was passionate about foreign languages, international travel and was an artist. She was influenced by Dr. Gretchen Grimm, who fostered her abilities in art education, and other faculty at UW-Eau Claire when she was a student – Dr. Roma Hoff and Drs. Antonio and Esther Lazcano helped her develop her fluency in Spanish. She received her undergraduate degree in Art Education and Spanish from UW-Eau Claire, her Master of Arts in Spanish from the Monterey Institute for International Studies in Monterey, CA and she completed doctoral coursework in Education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. While at UW-Eau Claire she taught in the CAMPUS program and Japan Program Services. Her family hosted many students from Panama and Mexico. She was honored with an award for her efforts helping students adjust to a foreign culture. During her lifetime she visited 27 countries. She had a philosophy of fostering understanding and appreciation of different cultures. Josette married her husband, Dennis Vanden Bloomen in the Basilica in Carmel, CA. They have a daughter, Gretchen. The recipient should send a thank you letter to Mr. Vanden Bloomen in care of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, S214.
