Foundation Scholarships

Hochstein, Gloria English Student Opportunity Fund

AMOUNT: $400.00
AVAILABLE: Annually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
The income from this endowed fund shall be used by the English department to recognize and encourage English majors and minors who show great promise. The fund would provide students majoring or minoring in English an incentive to take advantage of value-added educational experiences. It also would help those with limited financial resources who may not be able to participate in extra-curricular activities under normal circumstances. In particular, the fund is to encourage students in developing their leadership in English-related activities in addition to their classroom experiences. Some examples of qualifying activities include, but are not limited to, the following: to provide leadership for Sigma Tau Delta activities or the English Festival, to develop outreach programs to inspire young students to hone their writing and reading skills, to engage in undergraduate research experiences that will enhance their classroom experiences, to support research and writing leading to publication, and to help students attend professional conferences to present papers and creative works.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
To obtain a Hochstein Student Opportunity Grant, students must develop a brief proposal outlining their plan to enhance their education by pursuing an activity outside the classroom. The proposal process requires students to engage in the critical thinking process by giving an outline of what they plan to do, a timeline for completion, a statement of how this activity will enhance their education, and a budget of how they will use the grant. The proposal also requires a letter of recommendation from an English faculty or academic staff member. This letter should specifically address the promise demonstrated by the student applicant. Going through the process of writing and submitting a proposal is an added benefit because it requires students to think critically about their plans and to establish a timeline, and it provides a foundation for seeking and justifying the need for project funding, an essential skill in every professional situation.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
There is no set deadline for applying for grants, but since awards will be made as long as funding is available, early application is encouraged.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
A committee of current and emeriti English faculty shall review proposals and select recipients. Grants would depend upon available funds, the number and quality of applicants, and the scope of proposed projects.
