Hoffland, John Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a UW-Eau Claire junior or senior with a major in Journalism or Broadcast Journalism. The applicant should be able to demonstrate their intent to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, e.g., through related work experience, extra-curricular activities, and/or service. Financial need is required. Applicants must have a minimum total GPA of 3.0.

The Department of Communication and Journalism Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.

The Chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism will send notification to the recipient and complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.

John T. Hoffland had an outstanding leadership career in broadcast journalism. He was the News Director at WEAU-TV in Eau Claire for over 24 years. John worked with numerous University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire interns and mentored many undergraduates and new employees to become dedicated broadcast journalists. He encouraged all of them to develop their curiosity and presence including their speech/vocal articulation. They now work in newsrooms and leadership positions in television and radio stations across the United States. John’s passion was for professional, objective, and substantial journalism with an attention for accurate detail and he demanded that from all whom he trained, mentored, and supervised. John was a masterful storyteller. The John T. Hoffland Memorial Broadcast Journalism Scholarship was started and supported by business and professional associates and WEAU-TV watchers, as well as his wife Penny, son Lukas, and many friends after John’s death on July 4, 2009. The winner of this award is expected to attend the Department of Communication and Journalism Student Excellence Recognition Reception held the last day of spring classes. Recipient should write a thank you letter to the attention of Friends and Family of John Hoffland, and submit directly to the Department of Communication and Journalism program associate.
