AMOUNT: One at 1,000 AVAILABLE: Annually ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The endowed scholarship will provide an annual award to an outstanding mathematics major who has demonstrated great potential and financial need. First preference shall be given to a student who has been participating in the Excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science Scholarship (EMACS) program who has completed his/her scholarship eligibility for this program and who still needs financial support. If there are no students participating in the EMACS program who apply for this scholarship, the mathematics department scholarship committee has the option of selecting a recipient based upon the following criteria: applicants must be of sophomore or first semester junior standing (30- 74) who have completed or are currently enrolled in Math 216, declared mathematics teaching major and have a Math and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 each. The recipient must be a full-time student who has completed ES 210/211 with B- or better. Financial need is to be a primary consideration in selecting the recipient. Any student meeting the eligibility requirements may apply.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: To be considered, a student must complete an application form. Forms are available in the Mathematics Department Office (HHH 508) or copy and paste this link into a new browser window, http://uwec.edu/math/Awards/index.htm. Each applicant must write a brief statement of career objectives (50-100 words). Applicants must have two letters of support from math faculty (not necessarily from UW-Eau Claire). Include this letter with your application or send to Chair of the Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee, Department of Mathematics, UW-Eau Claire, 105 Garfield Avenue, Eau Claire, WI, 54702.APPLICATION DEADLINE: By the third Monday in FebruarySELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be based on demonstrated performance and potential in math including such things as GPA, career objective, communication skills, creativity, ingenuity, reliability, enthusiasm for the discipline, and participation in class and other Department activities.NOTIFICATION: The recipient will receive a notification letter and will be honored at the Department of Mathematics graduation and Awards Celebration. The Department will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid office.SPECIAL NOTES: The Stanley and Yvonne Hillestad Scholarship was established in 2006 with a generous gift from UW-Eau Claire alumni Stanley and Yvonne Hillestad. Stanley Hillestad graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1958 with a BS degree in mathematics and taught high school mathematics for 28 years. He also played intercollegiate tennis as a Blugold and continued for many years as the Memorial High School tennis coach. Yvonne Hillestad attended UW-Eau Claire in the 1950s as part of her nursing education and worked for many years as a nurse in Eau Claire. They are lifelong Eau Claire residents.
