AVAILABLE: Annually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Applicants must have a declared major in Education and Human Sciences or Social Work and be a full-time student. Scholarships will be awarded in alternate years—first award from Education in 2005-2006, next award from Social Work in 2006-2007. A minimum total GPA of 3.0 is required and a current financial need form on file (FAFSA) in Financial Aids. Succeeding generations of the Hanke family are eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship may be renewable.

Application forms are available in the Dean of Education and Human Sciences Office or the Social Work Department.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The department Scholarship Committee will select the recipient based on the criteria above.
SELECTION DEADLINE: March 31
NOTIFICATION:
The Dean will complete a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office and also send a notification letter to the recipient.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The scholarship recipient should send a thank-you note to LaVern and Janet Hanke in care of the UW-EC Foundation office, S-214. This scholarship is possible through the generosity of two graduates, Janet and Vern Hanke. LaVern Hanke is a 1950 Wausau Senior High School graduate, served 4 years in the US Air Force, graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1959, with a BA in Sociology, graduated from UW-Madison 1962, with Masters Degree in Social Work. First employed by the State of Wisconsin Division of Corrections as a Probation Parole Agent in Waupaca County, then in 1966, he was employed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs at Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, WI as its initial Director of Social Services. In 1978 he was appointed as Deputy Commandant at WVH retiring in 1991. He continues to live in Waupaca, active in the community, serving on the City Council, active in Waupaca Lions Club, Waupaca Nomads, Trinity Lutheran Church, curling and golf. Janet Hanke is a 1952 Merrill High School graduate and a 1954 graduate of the Lincoln County Teachers College. She taught elementary grades 1-6 at LaFollette School in Merrill School District for two years followed by graduation from UW-Eau Claire, 1958, with a BA in Education. She taught grade 4 for two years in Rochester, MN and one year in Madison, WI and taught in the Waupaca School District 1969-1993. She is retired and continues to be active in the community, serving in various positions at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Waupaca Lioness Club, and The American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoys curling, golf and reading. LaVern and Janet are parents of Paul, Rebecca (Hanke) Austin, and Aaron. Paul (‘85) and Aaron (’87) are also graduates of UW-Eau Claire.
