Golder/Cargill Geology Student Scholarship


AMOUNT: One at $2,000.00
AVAILABLE: Available. This is a non-renewable
scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Applicants must be comprehensive geology majors at UW-Eau Claire with an outstanding academic record and demonstrated financial need. Applicants must have a minimum GPA in geology major coursework of 3.0 and have completed Geology 312 (Mineralogy-Petrology I) with a grade of at least a “B.” Preference will be given to students who have completed Mineralogy-Petrology I during the previous semester, but other students are encouraged to apply. Academic accomplishments will be the major criterion for selection, but recipients must also demonstrate financial need. In addition, leadership and participation in extracurricular activities will be considered. Previous recipients of the Golder Associates Scholarship are ineligible to reapply.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Application forms must be picked up in the Geology Department Office, Phillips Hall 157. The completed application will include: Resume (Should highlight academic distinctions as well as leadership and extracurricular participation. Leadership and participation in organizations and activities connected to the geology major will be given additional weight during the evaluation process.) An official UWEC transcript An essay that addresses how the applicant became a geology major, why the applicant thinks he/she has the potential to contribute to the geology profession, and describes his/her financial need. This essay must be less than one page long (double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins on all sides).
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Completed applications are due in the Geology Department Office by March 15 (or the following Monday if March 15 falls on a weekend).
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
A committee of all tenured and tenure-track Geology Department faculty shall meet in March to evaluate applications. All members of the committee will have one vote. Applicants will be evaluated based on the established criteria.
SELECTION DEADLINE:
The scholarship winner will be notified by April 15th.
NOTIFICATION:
The scholarship award winner will be notified by a letter from the Geology Department Chair. Applicants not receiving the scholarship will also be notified by a letter from the Geology Department Chair. A copy of the letter will be sent to Greg and Julia Beckstrom, the UW- Eau Claire Foundation. A “Scholarship Award Form” will be submitted to the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid Office by the Geology Department.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The scholarship money will be transferred directly from the Foundation to the student’s account in the university business office. Half of the scholarship money will be transferred at the start of the fall semester and the other half at the start of the spring semester. As a condition of acceptance, the recipient is expected to send a note of appreciation to Gregory and Julia Beckstrom in care of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Schofield 214. This scholarship was established in 2005 by Gregory (B.S. ’84) and Julia (Weinstock) (B.B.A. ’85) Beckstrom of Minneapolis, MN. Gregory, a geology graduate, is a senior consultant and associate with Golder Associates, a premier global group of consulting companies, specializing in ground engineering and environmental services. Julia, an MIS graduate, is an IT manager with Cargill, Inc.
