ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must be enrolled in the Comprehensive or Standard Major: English- Teaching; demonstrate intent to be an English teacher; have junior status in the fall when the scholarship is received; and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. The primary consideration is that the applicant must demonstrate financial need as verified by the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid Office.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Application forms are available in the English Department Office. Applicants must submit a letter of application, a current transcript, and a resume along with the names of two UW-Eau Claire English professors who can speak to their qualifications for this scholarship.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The English Department Scholarship Committee will select the recipient based on the scholarship criteria and the strength of the application.
SELECTION DEADLINE: Approximately April 1
NOTIFICATION:
Notification to the recipient will be made by the English Department Scholarship Committee. The recipient will be formally honored during the annual English Festival Awards Ceremony. The English Department should complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The recipient should send a thank-you letter to Jo Ellen Dougherty, Nan’s daughter, in care of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Office, S-214. This scholarship was established in 2006 in honor of Nan Dougherty, who taught English at UW-Eau Claire for nearly 20 years from 1967-1988. Mrs. Dougherty was a former president of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English. She was well-known and beloved by her colleagues, friends and former students.
