AMOUNT: $500 per year AVAILABLE: Available ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The Eberth Alarcon Memorial Scholarship was established by his wife, Dr. Asha Sen. This endowed scholarship will provide an annual scholarship to an outstanding incoming Latino/Latina freshman interested in a major in mathematics. Financial need will be a primary consideration. The recipient, to be selected by the university’s Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs in consultation with faculty in the Mathematics Department, will demonstrate a passion for a variety of interests in topics as diverse as politics, global affairs, reading, travel and sport. Two letters of recommendation are required, at least one from a high school teacher, addressing the student’s mathematical accomplishments, leadership and broad interests. The Admissions Office and Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs shall work closely to identify applicants for this scholarship.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Applicants should contact the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs for further information.APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1stSELECTION PROCEDURE: The Director of the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs in consultation with faculty in the Mathematics Department will select the award recipient.NOTIFICATION: The Director of the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs will send a letter of notification to the recipient. The Director will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.SPECIAL NOTES: Dr. Eberth Alarcon, 40, joined the UW-Eau Claire Mathematics Department in 1995 as a professor. He died in September, 2006, after a valiant fight against acute leukemia. Eberth was known for his mathematical talents, energy and passion for teaching, love of games such as basketball and backgammon, and a strong sense for social justice. Friends and colleagues said his generosity and good spirit led him to form lifelong friendships wherever he went. His wife, Ash Sen, is an associate professor of English at UW-Eau Claire. It is required that the recipient sends a letter of appreciation to Dr. Asha Sen in care of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Office, S-214. |
