Oliphant, Jeff Athletic Training Scholarship


AMOUNT: $700
AVAILABLE: Anually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student in his or her junior year majoring in athletic training who shows great promise as a certified athletic trainer. The scholarship recipient must be able to demonstrate excellence in academic performance, leadership, and service to the profession. The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Obtain application form from the Department of Kinesiology. The application form, along with appropriate supporting information, should be returned by March 15 to the Department of Kinesiology Office.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Last Friday in March
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The Department of Kinesiology Scholarship Committee will review the applications and in consultation with the Oliphant family select the recipient.
SELECTION DEADLINE: Prior to the end of the spring
semester.
NOTIFICATION:
The Chair of the Scholarship Committee or the Chair of the department will notify the recipient. The Department Chair will submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The recipient should send a thank-you letter to Andrew Wilhorn in care of the Foundation Office, S-214. This scholarship is given in memory of Jeff Oliphant who died suddenly on August 12, 2005. Jeff was a beloved member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty and pioneered the accredited athletic training major at UW-Eau Claire. This scholarship honors his life’s work and dedication to athletic training excellence. The scholarship is given to a promising athletic training education student who will uphold the standards of professionalism and excellence by which Jeff lived. Andrew Wilhorn worked as a student athletic trainer under the direction of Jeff Oliphant for four years at UW-Eau Claire. Andrew graduated in 1995 as a kinesiology major. He then completed his master’s degree in Fitness Leadership at East Tennessee State University where he was a graduate assistant in the Athletic Training Department. Andrew has worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota since 1999. He now serves as an anatomy assistant in the Mayo Clinic Department of Anatomy. Andrew and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Gabriel and Michael. Melissa is a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic. Jeff Oliphant was very influential on Andrew who supports the Jeff Oliphant Athletic Training Scholarship in honor of the life and work of his mentor.
