SEMANTCS PRAGMATC
Why does “Ana saw the monkey with the binoculars” have
more than one interpretation? Why does “Stella is knowing
French” sound odd? In this course we will explore these
and other questions about the meanings of words and
sentences (semantics) and the use of language in context
(pragmatics). In addition to all other class assignments,
graduate students are expected to do extra work, which
may include one or more of the following: preparing
individual research projects; writing longer, more
scholarly research papers; giving longer, more scholarly
class presentations; supervising undergraduate projects.
