The clinical practicum for NRSG 368 can be accomplished during an 8-10 day trip to Weslaco, TX in the Rio Grande valley. This course includes working with children, families with children, and perinatal families within the context of community. Students function in roles of care provider, educator, member of a interdisciplinary team, and apply research findings in practice. Venues will include prenatal clinics, home visits, assigned labor call/care, childbirth classes, and other community support projects. Seminar meetings prior to the trip will provide discussions of American & Mexican values, beliefs, practice, and cultural competence. Speaking Spanish, although very helpful, is not required for this experience. The trip occurs in winterim or over spring break.
