EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student received a prestigious scholarship for her work toward earning a degree to teach science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Emma Voegeli, a senior chemistry and mathematics major from Eau Claire, received the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Scholarship for Teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The STEM award includes a $5,000 scholarship and a $1,000 grant that will be given every year during Voegeli's first three years of teaching. Grant money can go toward classroom supplies, subject-related field trips or extracurricular activities.

The AFCEA Educational Foundation offered 50 scholarships to students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) subjects at a U.S. middle or secondary school.

Voegeli plans to graduate from UW-Eau Claire in May 2012 and then teach math and science at the middle and high school levels. She said she loves education and aspires to become an expert teacher.

"I believe a country's long-lasting success must be founded on its educational excellence," Voegeli said. "I take pride in choosing education as my career because I want to be a contributing citizen by preparing highly skilled students for careers that require science or math knowledge."

Dr. Alex Smith, chair of the mathematics department and one of Voegeli's endorsers for the scholarship, said he is confident she will succeed in the teaching field.

"Emma has a disposition suited for being an excellent teacher — she continually exhibits the joy of learning," Smith said.
