EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Nicholas Phillips, assistant professor of music, and Dr. David Lonzarich, professor of biology, have been selected as Faculty Fellows in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for the 2011-12 academic year.

Phillips joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty in 2007. As an ORSP Fellow, he will work with a team to advance undergraduate research activities on campus. Phillips also will help promote a dialogue about scholarship in the arts and humanities.

"How we define research or creative activity often varies across disciplines," Phillips said. "Embracing these differences can have a very positive impact on the scholarly experiences and activities of both faculty and students, leading to new discoveries, greater depth of knowledge and even unexpected collaborations."

One such new partnership is between Phillips and Lonzarich, who will work together to further undergraduate research initiatives across disciplines.

In his role as an ORSP Fellow, Lonzarich will participate in the upcoming Council on Undergraduate Research workshop for institutionalizing undergraduate research. He is part of a team of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) faculty who will take part in this intensive workshop and then help advance undergraduate research across the UW System and at UW-Eau Claire.

Before and after the CUR workshop, Lonzarich and Phillips will work together to further CUR initiatives. They are part of two collaborating faculty teams, one for STEM and social science disciplines and another representing arts and humanities.

"This collaboration among disciplines will help us learn from each other about different methods of research or scholarship and how faculty and students can collaborate," Lonzarich said.

Lonzarich has a strong record of faculty/student research activity, including a recent Student-Faculty International Fellows Program project on San Salvador Island with two students studying fish and plants and the impact of coral reef health and ecology on fish distribution.

"One of the goals of the ORSP Faculty Fellow opportunity is to provide an opportunity to obtain different experiences and make new connections," said Dr. Karen Havholm, assistant vice chancellor for research and director of the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration. "These experiences influence the Fellows' teaching, research and scholarly activities, ultimately benefitting UW-Eau Claire students."

Those interested in the ORSP Faculty Fellow opportunity are invited to contact orsp@uwec.edu or 715-836-3405.
