U.S. News again ranks UW-Eau Claire among top five public universities in the Midwest

RELEASED: Sept. 13, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — U.S. News & World Report magazine has again named the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire among the best public regional universities in the Midwest.

The 2012 edition of "America's Best Colleges" ranks UW-Eau Claire No. 5 among the top regional public universities in the Midwest and 32nd among all private and public institutions in the Midwest. Every year since 1995, U.S. News has consistently ranked UW-Eau Claire among the top five public institutions in the Midwest and in the top third of public and private Midwestern regional universities.

Among the U.S. News-ranked regional universities, UW-Eau Claire also is recognized as one of 37 Midwestern "A-Plus Schools for B Students."

U.S. News & World Report ranks UW-Eau Claire in the "Regional Universities" category. The category's Midwest region includes schools in 12 states stretching from the Dakotas in the west to Missouri in the south and Ohio in the east. Public and private universities included in this category provide undergraduate- and master's-level programs, and typically draw students from surrounding states.

The regional rankings include 626 schools in four geographic areas (North, South, Midwest and West). The rankings reflect how schools compare within their regions on a set of indicators that have traditionally been used by U.S. News & World Report to compare colleges and universities across the nation. Those indicators include such things as academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, class sizes, freshman high school class ranking and ACT scores, graduation and freshman retention rates, and alumni giving.

UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich said the high U.S. News & World Report ranking — as well as inclusion in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's 2010-11 "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" list and The Princeton Review's 2012 list of "Best Midwestern Colleges" — are encouraging as UW-Eau Claire advances toward its 2016 centennial vision to be the premier undergraduate learning community in the Upper Midwest.

"All of our recent recognitions affirm that we are meeting a real demand by offering our students a unique, transformative learning experience," Levin-Stankevich said. "Our priority going forward will be to continue to keep academic excellence at the forefront as we face the challenges presented by the current economy and its pressures on public finance."

The U.S. News & World Report rankings will be available online Sept. 13 at www.usnews.com/colleges and through the U.S. News College Compass. The 2012 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook also will be available on newsstands Sept. 20.
