EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's planetarium is now open for the 2011-12 academic year.

Public shows at the L.E. Phillips Planetarium are offered at 7 p.m. Tuesdays for adults and children 12 and older. Shows for children ages 4-12 are presented at 11 a.m. Saturdays. Group shows and school field trips can be arranged for groups of 50 or fewer people.

Each show includes a presentation on a specific topic, which changes monthly. The programs, which run for one hour, generally include a 20-minute multimedia presentation.

The planetarium provides opportunities for visitors to learn about space, the solar system and the stars in the night sky. Presenters will discuss sky motions, help visitors learn to identify constellations and answer questions about astronomy.

The current Tuesday show is "More Than Meets the Eye," which focuses on where celestial objects are located in the night sky as well as what they look like through binoculars or large telescopes. In October the Tuesday show will be "Adventures along the Spectrum," which will focus on how the sky looks in images made at different wavelengths.

The Saturday children's show currently features "Cricket and Friends see a Comet," which is appropriate since Comet Garradd now can be seen in the sky using binoculars or a telescope. The October children's show will be "Secrets of the Cardboard Rocket," which will take visitors on a tour of the planets in the solar system.

There will not be a public show Oct. 22 or during Thanksgiving weekend.

Admission to shows is $2 at the door. Visitors should arrive 10 minutes before the show begins.

The planetarium is located in L.E. Phillips Science Hall on lower campus. Free parking is available during weekends and evenings.

More information about the planetarium is available online or by calling 715-836-5034.
