National Day on Writing events planned on campus

RELEASED: Oct. 17, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The Center for Writing Excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will kick off its celebration of the National Day on Writing Oct.17 with a Post-It Note Haiku contest at the University Bookstore.

On Oct. 18, a banner for seven-word memoirs will be hung in the Hibbard Hall hallway. Participants are welcome to write personal memoirs.

The National Day on Writing, which occurs Oct. 20, is recognized as a time to celebrate all forms of writing.

Events will take place throughout the day Oct. 20. Festivities will begin at 8 a.m. with a 10-minute fiction contest in the University Bookstore. Paper, pens and seating will be available for participants. Entries will be judged after 3 p.m. and one winner will receive a Moleskin notebook as a prize.

The celebration will continue with "Bakery for Haiku" from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Davies Center lobby. At noon, readings will take place in The Cabin of Davies Center. Several local writers will share their works in 5-10 minute blocks. At 3 p.m. there will be an open reading in the second-floor breezeway of McIntyre Library. All writers are welcome to share their own works as well as works from favorite authors and writers.

UW-Eau Claire's National Day on Writing will close with an open house from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Center for Writing Excellence in Room 2003 of McIntyre Library. Refreshments will be provided, and the winner of the 10-minute fiction contest will be announced.

The Center for Writing Excellence encourages all students, faculty and community members to submit works to the local Gallery of Student Writing in McIntyre Library and the National Gallery of Writing to mark the occasion.
