Volleyball team to host breast cancer awareness event Oct. 19

RELEASED: Oct. 13, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's volleyball program will host the fourth annual Breast Cancer Awareness and Fundraising Event at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 against UW-River Falls in the McPhee Physical Education Center on upper campus.

Over the past three years, the breast cancer awareness event and fundraiser at UW-Eau Claire has raised more than $30,000 for breast cancer research, awareness and patient programs. The event is part of a collaborative effort among Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference volleyball programs to support the fight against breast cancer.

The women's volleyball team has partnered once again with Mayo Clinic Health System, Charter Media and 13 area high school volleyball teams.

UW-Eau Claire's volleyball program will assist partner schools in organizing breast cancer fundraising and awareness events at their respective schools. Participating high schools include Altoona, Blair-Taylor, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire Immanuel, Eau Claire Memorial, Eau Claire North, Eau Claire Regis, Eleva-Strum, Elk Mound, Fall Creek, Gilmanton, Pepin and Prairie Farm. All funds raised through the various events will be donated to the American Cancer Society and used in the Chippewa Valley.

High school and middle school teams may attend the Oct. 19 event for free without participating as a partner. Teams should preregister by contacting Kim Wudi, UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball head coach, at 715-836-4343 or wudikm@uwec.edu.

Area youth who do not attend with a team will receive the youth night rate, which includes two free youth tickets with the purchase of one adult ticket.

T-shirts and merchandise will be for sale, and numerous contests and other fundraisers will take place throughout the night. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink in support of all those affected by breast cancer.
