Higher Education Awareness Week activities to bring area youth to campus

Local students participate in Blugold Beginnings

EAU CLAIRE — A weeklong series of events designed to promote higher education to Chippewa Valley youth will take place Oct. 16-23 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The activities will bring hundreds of area middle and high school students to the UW-Eau Claire campus.

UW-Eau Claire's Higher Education Awareness Week activities include:

  • Students from Memorial and North high schools in Eau Claire will be on the UW-Eau Claire campus from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 17 as part of the College Access visit program. The high school students will participate in a series of campus workshops on access to higher education, study abroad, student organizations, financial aid and application writing. They also will eat lunch on upper campus and participate in a campus tour.
  • High school students from the Chippewa Valley and their parents can attend workshops from 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 18 in Room 102 of Hibbard Hall. The College Access workshops will include information about financial aid, scholarships and application writing. The event was made possible by a College Access Challenge Grant administered by the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp.
  • The Admissions Office will host a Multicultural Visit Preview Day Oct. 20. Activities will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in various campus locations. Activities will include presentations, a campus tour, photo scavenger hunt, majors fair and academic workshops. The workshops will include tours of academic departments, sitting in on classes and meeting with faculty members.
  • One hundred Blugold Beginnings UW-Eau Claire student mentors will bring their fifth-through 12th-grade mentees to Carson Park for a tailgate party and the Blugold football game Oct. 22. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. with the tailgate lunch. Blugold Beginnings College Day will give area youngsters an opportunity to socialize with university students and learn more about UW-Eau Claire. Blugold Beginnings is a program that brings together current university students with elementary through high school students from several Chippewa Valley schools.
  • College application writing workshops will take place at Memorial and North high schools throughout the week.
  • Contests and brain challenges will take place in middle and high schools in Eau Claire throughout Higher Education Awareness Week. Contests will include College Bingo Oct. 18, College Trivia Oct. 19, Wisconsin and Minnesota College Search Oct. 20 and College T-shirt Day Oct. 21.

Higher Education Awareness Week events will be sponsored by Blugold Beginnings, UW-Eau Claire Admissions, the Eau Claire Area School District, Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp. and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
