RELEASED: Oct. 12, 2011

Wind Symphony

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wind Symphony and Symphony Band — featuring guest conductor Craig Kirchhoff — will perform at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The evening will open with the Symphony Band, directed by Dr. Phillip Ostrander, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of music. The performance will begin with "Don Ricardo," a piece written in the Spanish tradition by Gabriel Musella. Other performance pieces include "Puszta," a collection of gypsy dances, and "Glory of the Yankee Navy," from the 1909 musical comedy "The Yankee Girl."

The Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Peter Haberman, assistant professor of music, will open the second half of the concert with "Smetana Fanfare" by Karel Husa. "Aurora Awakes" by John Mackey will follow. The piece, titled after the Roman goddess of the dawn, is about the heralding of the coming of light.

The performance will end with the Wind Symphony performing "First Suite in E-flat" by Gustav Holst. The piece is considered to be a cornerstone of works developed for concert band by British composers.

Guest conductor Craig Kirchhoff, a professor of conducting and directing of university bands at the University of Minnesota, has won critical acclaim by numerous composers, and has appeared as a guest conductor and lecturer across the United States and around the world.

The Wind Symphony and Symphony Band ensembles, dedicated to the performance of the finest traditional and contemporary works, are open to all university students by audition.

Concert tickets, available online and at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
