Norwegian horror-comedy 'Trollhunter' to screen

RELEASED: Oct. 6, 2011

Trollhunter

EAU CLAIRE — "Trollhunter" (Norway 2010), a dry horror-comedy styled as a found-footage documentary, will screen Oct. 20-23 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The University Activities Commission of the Student Senate will present the film at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

For their final project, three student filmmakers (Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Morck, Tomas Alf Larsen) set out to investigate allegations of bear poaching in the remote northern forests of Norway. Their suspicions quickly fasten upon a secretive, grizzled prime suspect named Hans (Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen). Refusing to be interviewed, Hans escapes into the wilderness in his badly scratched Land Rover. He is secretly followed by the would-be documentarians, whose persistence lands them straight in the path of the objects of Hans' pursuits: ferocious, gigantic and immensely dangerous trolls with a hunger for fresh meat.

"If you mixed equal parts 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Scooby-Doo,' the resulting film would be a lot like 'Trollhunter,'" wrote the Seattle International Film Festival. "In his debut feature, director Andre Ovredal eschews the formula set by other 'found footage' horror flicks by showing off his monsters in their full, repulsive glory, while cleverly maintaining an intense, sardonic tone."

In Norwegian with English subtitles, the 90-minute film is rated PG-13 for some sequences of creature terror.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films can purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4 and a family membership is $10.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities, Involvement and Leadership office in Davies Center 133.
