Wausau West High School faculty establish copycat scholarship

RELEASED: Nov. 21, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Jerry Reinardy, a 1991 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire German education graduate who is a teacher at Wausau West High School, was reading UW-Eau Claire's online alumni publication when he felt compelled to do something he discourages his students from doing; he copied somebody else's idea.

After reading that six UW-Eau Claire alumni who are on faculty at Grafton High School created a scholarship to encourage Grafton students to attend UW-Eau Claire, Reinardy was inspired to do the same at his school.

"I read about what Grafton (High School alumni) did and realized that with 15 UW-Eau Claire graduates on our staff at Wausau West, we could do it here as well," Reinardy said.

Several of the UW-Eau Claire alumni who work at Wausau West have lunch together nearly every day, and conversations occasionally drift to the great experiences they had at UW-Eau Claire and to their professors, Reinardy said.

"When I brought up the idea of a scholarship like Grafton's, no one batted an eye," said Reinardy, who is encouraging alumni and friends of Wausau West High School to contribute so the fund can become endowed. "Everyone just knew it was the right thing to do for a Wausau West graduate and something that we hope will be here long after we're gone."
