Media Memo: RateMyProfessors.com: UW-Eau Claire researchers explore site's reliability

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette, News Bureau director

DATE: Nov. 18, 2011

SUBJECT: RateMyProfessors.com: UW-Eau Claire researchers explore site's reliability

Is RateMyProfessors.com a reliable source of information regarding a college professor's quality of teaching? Students who rank professors on the site "are likely providing each other with useful information about quality of instruction," according to research results by Dr. April Bleske-Rechek, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of psychology, and senior psychology major Amber Fritsch published this month in the journal Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation.

The paper by Bleske-Rechek and Fritsch, "Student Consensus on RateMyProfessors.com," was the subject of a Nov. 18 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Their paper "suggests [RateMyProfessors.com] is a more useful barometer of instructor quality than you might think, at least in the aggregate," the Chronicle article stated.

Dr. April Bleske-Rechek and Amber Fritsch are available to talk to reporters regarding their research on RateMyProfessors.com. Contact Bleske-Rechek at 715-864-8000 or 715-831-6352.
