EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wind Symphony and Symphony Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The evening will open with the Symphony Band, directed by Dr. Phillip Ostrander, associate professor of music. The performance will begin with Josh Gratzen's "Euphoria," Carl Maria von Weber's "Andante and Hungarian Rhondo," featuring Dr. Jacqueline Wilson, lecturer of music, on bassoon. This piece first appeared in 1809 as a show piece for solo viola and orchestra. A revised version for solo bassoon and orchestra appeared in 1813. The Symphony Band also will perform John Mackey's "Hymn to a Blue Hour," "Limerick Daydreams" by Nathan Daughtry, "Ginger Marmalade" by Wade Benson and "Folk Dances" by Dmitri Shostakovich, arranged by Donald Hunsberger.

The Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Peter Haberman, assistant professor of music, will open the second half of the concert with Leonard Bernstein's "Overture to Candide" from Bernstein's third Broadway musical. "Um Mitternacht" by Gustav Mahler, featuring Dr. Mark Mowry, tenor and assistant professor of voice, will follow. The piece recounts the poet's battle with darkness until he commends himself to the hands of God.

The performance will end with the Wind Symphony performing "Divertimento" by Vincent Persichetti and Richard Wagner's "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral."

The Wind Symphony and Symphony Band ensembles, dedicated to the performance of the finest traditional and contemporary works, are open to all university students by audition.

Concert tickets, available online and at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
