EAU CLAIRE — A new University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire art exhibit, "Birth to the World Four More," will open Dec. 1 in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The show is this semester's bachelor of fine arts candidates' senior show. A reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Foster Gallery to celebrate the opening of the show, which will feature pieces by four students. The exhibit will run through Dec. 11.

Constance Thomson Best-Ashby, Eau Claire, will showcase pieces representing the four decades that it took her to complete her education. Best-Ashby said her choices of medium, symbolism and color are a direct reflection of her feelings toward events happening in her life.

True Lor, Eau Claire, will show ceramic teapots and platters. True said her art was influenced by her Hmong heritage, though it doesn't dominate her style.

"The simple teapots and shapes of platters reflect the American that I am," Lor said.

Ivan Ventzke, Wausau, will exhibit sculptural ceramics. Ventzke described his work as abstracted natural forms.

"I'm heavily influenced by the Chippewa River, as well as the driftwood and fallen trees I've found along the shore," Ventzke said.

Kim Vaughter, Stevens Point, will show five pieces, including three large installations. Two pieces are triptych paintings, with one idea shown over three paintings. Vaughter said she hopes viewers will ponder the meaning of the juxtaposition of childlike color and sarcastic, mature elements shown throughout her work.

It's exciting to see the portfolios of graduating seniors on display, said Tom Wagener, Foster Gallery director. He described the exhibit as a culmination of the varied experiences the artists have had as art students, brought together in their senior thesis projects.
