Environmental writer among speakers during Geography Awareness Week

Geography Awareness

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate Geography Awareness Week Nov. 14-18 with events, lectures and films on campus.

All events are free and open to the public. Events include:

  • Nov. 14 — Geography and Anthropology Bee, 6:30-9 p.m., Room 007, Phillips Science Hall.
  • Nov. 15 — Chili and Stew Feed, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., lobby, Phillips Science Hall.
  • Nov. 16 (Geographic Information Systems Day) —
  • Geocaching event, 9-11 a.m., Room 268, Phillips Science Hall. Enter to win a Garmin GPS.
  • Screening of "Geospatial Revolution" film series, 10-11 a.m., Room 268, Phillips Science Hall.
  • GIS information booth, noon-1:30 p.m., Davies Center.
  • Geocaching event, 2-5 p.m., Room 268, Phillips Science Hall.
  • GIS Open House, 4-6 p.m., Room 275, Phillips Science Hall.
  • Screening of "Geospatial Revolution" film series, 7-8 p.m., Room 268, Phillips Science Hall.

  • Nov. 17 — Guest speaker Kennedy Warne, "The true price of that shrimp cocktail, or mangrove forests: Where first world appetites meet third world livelihoods," 7-8 p.m., Room 101, Hibbard Hall. Warne will discuss how industrial shrimp farming and widespread coastal development are threatening mangrove forests and the people who rely on them. Warne co-founded New Zealand Geographic Magazine in 1988 and has written for National Geographic, Smithsonian, Canadian Geographic, GEO and various travel publications. More information.
  • Nov. 18 — Guest speaker Kennedy Warne, "Reefs, fjords, shoals, mangroves and deltas: Environmental journalism is for shrimps," 4 p.m., Room 281, Phillips Science Hall. Kennedy will speak on the art of writing for National Geographic and other prominent publications as an environmental journalist. More information.
