Media Memo: Students help create breastfeeding awareness exhibit to debut Nov. 12

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette, UW-Eau Claire News Bureau

DATE: Nov. 11, 2011

SUBJECT: Students help create breastfeeding awareness exhibit
to debut Nov. 12

Two UW-Eau Claire nursing students have helped develop a multimedia art exhibit, to debut from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Heyde Center for the Arts in Chippewa Falls, about the benefits of breastfeeding. The exhibit features photographs and video recordings of women throughout Chippewa County speaking about their breastfeeding experiences and is intended to generate greater community understanding of and support for breastfeeding.

Senior nursing majors Kaitlin Krug and Jacqueline Vesely worked with Jennifer Lenbom, a public health nurse with the Chippewa County Public Health Department, to create the exhibit as part of the course work for a capstone class, "Nursing Practice: Application and Reflection," taught by Kathy German-Olson, clinical agency coordinator in UW-Eau Claire's department of nursing.

The exhibit is an example of how art can communicate positive health messages, Lenbom said. Following the Heyde Center debut, the exhibit will be shared in the community in locations such as libraries and medical clinic waiting rooms to help educate the public and generate community support for mothers who breastfeed.

Those involved in the project are available to discuss its intended impact on public perceptions of breastfeeding in Chippewa County. Contact Jennifer Lenbom, Chippewa County public health nurse, at 715-475-8454 or jlenbom@co.chippewa.wi.us; nursing student Jacqueline Vesely at 715-574-9152 or veselyjm@uwec.edu; and Kathy German-Olson, UW-Eau Claire nursing department clinical agency coordinator, at 715-514-0990, 715-836-5000 or germanka@uwec.edu.
