Local Air Force veteran to wrap up UW-Eau Claire Veterans Day events

RELEASED: Nov. 7, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Retired Col. Dan Doughty, a town of Seymour resident who served more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and spent almost seven years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, will be the keynote speaker during a Nov. 11 Veterans Day Celebration at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. (Doughty recounted his ordeal as a POW in North Vietnam in a Nov. 6 Leader-Telegram article.)

Doughty's talk will be the last of several Veterans Day activities planned for Nov. 9-11. Details of the week's events are as follows:

  • Connie Bengston, a public health nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, will present "From Combat Boots to Classroom and Books" to UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff from noon-1 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. The session also will include a discussion among a panel of student military veterans about their transition from military to campus life. UW-Eau Claire's military benefits coordinator also will share research and statistics. The presentation is sponsored by the university's Student Affairs Professional Development Committee. For more information, contact Amy Hobbs at 715-836-5992.

  • The UW-Eau Claire Veterans Club will hold a bake sale from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 10 in the east lobby of Davies Center. Part of the profits will go to support the Trinity Equestrian Center in Eau Claire, which offers free equine-assisted psychotherapy to returning and recovering combat veterans and their families. The bake sale is open to the public.

  • Also from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 10, the Veterans Club will sell flags for the Eau Claire Field of Honor, to be displayed Sept. 6-18, 2012. Those interested can purchase an American flag for $30 and have it dedicated it to a veteran and displayed at the event. Those purchasing flags will be able to keep the flags after the 2012 display. Ten dollars from each flag sold Nov. 10 will go to support the Veterans Club. The Eau Claire Field of Honor flag sale is open to the public.

  • Doughty will speak at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 during the UW-Eau Claire Veterans Day Celebration in the Presidents Room of Davies Center, sharing details of his military experience, including his time as a POW in North Vietnam after being shot down during his 170th combat mission. Following the presentation, which is open to the public, attendees are invited to a meet-and-greet event at 10:30 a.m. in the UW-Eau Claire Veterans Center (Room 20, Schofield Hall). Attendees are invited to meet Doughty and UW-Eau Claire veterans and thank them for their military service. The Veterans Day Celebration is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Veterans Services. For more information, contact Miranda Cross-Schindler, UW-Eau Claire's military benefits coordinator, at 715-836-5212 or crossmk@uwec.edu.
