Artists Series to present rapid-fire tap dance troupe Rhythmic Circus Nov. 14

RELEASED: Nov. 4, 2011

Rythmic Circus

EAU CLAIRE — Rhythmic Circus, a rapid-fire tap dance troupe that the Minneapolis Star Tribune has called "flat out amazing," will perform Nov. 14 for the Artists Series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Named the Best Dance Performance of 2011 by City Pages, the company's production "Feet Don't Fail Me Now!" will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

"The show approximates the cocktail you would get by putting tap dancing, stepping, jazz, funk and film noir into a blender at high speed, then sprinkling the whole thing with slapstick comedy," wrote Twin Cities review website How Was the Show.

"Feet Don't Fail Me Now!" blends hard-hitting tap, high-spirited humor and finger-snapping tunes, exploring rhythm and percussive dance through musical genres from funk to salsa. The dancers perform on everything from sand to folding chairs, and in one number even use the technology of electric drum triggers to change the sound of their taps. Featuring a seven-piece band, vocalists and a beat-boxer, "Feet Don't Fail Me Now!" premiered in 2008 at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis, when the group's dancers joined forces with Twin Cities musicians to integrate their inventive style of percussive dance with a wide variety of musical genres.

Although the company's official inception was in 2007, Rhythmic Circus' core members have been choreographing and performing together since 2004. The troupe has opened for Savion Glover's Bare Soundz, collaborated with Vocal Essence in "Witness: A Tribute to Duke Ellington" at the Ordway Performing Arts Center and appeared in the Minnesota Orchestra's Crash! Bang! Boom! Percussion Festival at Orchestra Hall. As well as touring throughout the season, Rhythmic Circus plans to open off-Broadway in October 2012.
