UW-Eau Claire Police to mobilize for 'Click It or Ticket' May 23-June 5

RELEASED: May 23, 2011

Click It Or TicketEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Police will intensify enforcement of the mandatory safety belt law during the annual Click It or Ticket mobilization May 23-June 5.

More than 300 law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin are expected to participate in this year's Click It or Ticket, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

"Too often people are killed or seriously injured in a crash because they were not buckled up," said Lt. Jay Dobson. "That's why we're serious about safety belt enforcement."

To save lives and prevent injuries, officers will stop a vehicle and take enforcement action whenever they see a driver or passenger not wearing a safety belt, Dobson said.

"Our goal is not to write more tickets but to convince people to buckle up voluntarily so that eventually we can reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths to zero in Wisconsin," Dobson said. "Don't ignore the law and common sense."

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are cracking down on unbelted motorists, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Last year there were nearly 120,000 convictions for failure to fasten a safety belt, which was an all-time high. Among all traffic violations, safety belt convictions in Wisconsin were second only to speeding convictions.

Members of the media who would like to interview an officer or ride along on patrol during the Click It or Ticket mobilization may contact Lt. Jay Dobson at 715-836-2222.
