EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Jennifer Fager has been named director of assessment at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire following a national search. She will begin her new post in the university's academic affairs division on July 1.

Fager will lead the design and implementation of a universitywide assessment program that furthers student achievement of UW-Eau Claire's liberal education learning goals and outcomes.

"Assessing the value of a college education (that is, student success) has become a political 'hot topic' both inside and outside higher education," said Dr. Patricia A. Kleine, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. "Dr. Fager has been involved in this national conversation at the highest levels for the past several years. She brings to the university perspectives and insights honed from her extensive experiences across the country as a university assessment mentor, consultant and evaluator."

The search and screen committee reviewed a strong field of candidates for the assessment director position, said MJ Brukardt, search and screen committee chair and special assistant to the chancellor for strategic planning.

"We were impressed with Dr. Fager's depth of experience and her commitment to assisting faculty and staff across the university to enhance their effectiveness in advancing student success," Brukardt said.

Fager comes to UW-Eau Claire from Xavier University in Cincinnati, where since 2008 she served as the associate dean of education in the College of Social Sciences, Health and Education.

"Assessment of student learning is central to the mission of any institution of higher learning," Fager said. "I am thrilled to be joining the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where students are the focus of the mission and vision. I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the university to further its commitment to student success. I am honored to be joining Provost Kleine and her staff."

Fager also previously served as an associate professor and department chair of middle and secondary teacher education at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Mich.; as director of academic assessment in the provost's office at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; as director for curriculum and assessment in academic affairs at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.; and in faculty positions at Western Michigan University, the University of New Hampshire and South Dakota State University. She also was a high school teacher in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a middle school teacher in Lincoln, Neb.

Fager is a reviewer for the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education, an assessment mentor for the Higher Learning Commission's Academy for Assessment of Student Learning, and a consultant-evaluator and team chair for the Higher Learning Commission. She has been a frequent presenter on assessing learning outcomes at conferences of the Higher Learning Commission, The Academy for Assessment of Student Learning and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, as well as a guest speaker at university campuses across the nation.

Fager received a doctorate in administration, curriculum and instruction with emphases in assessment and teacher education; a master's degree in curriculum and instruction; and a bachelor's degree in political science — all from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
