Senior German majors Kristin Gilbank, Janesville, and Allison Shantz, Almond, will teach in multiple schools in Austria from October 2011-May 2012.

Gilbank learned about the program while studying in Graz, Austria. She will teach at three secondary schools in Voitsberg, assisting English teachers with the English language curriculum. She will act as a classroom resource and expert on the American way of life by providing supplemental materials such as radio and televisions reports, music, pictures, magazines and books to augment the curriculum.

"I look forward to working with the Austrian students," Gilbank said. "It will be wonderful to share my experiences with them, learn from them and build professional mentor-student relationships with them."

Shantz will teach high school students in two different communities and plans to spend some time immersing herself in community activities to learn more about the area and improve her German language skills.

The foreign languages department at UW-Eau Claire and the German area in particular, is well represented by teaching assistantships for the 2011-12 academic year. Three students and an alumna have been awarded English teaching assistantships under the U.S. Student Fulbright program (read news release).
