Gift from Northwestern Mutual to support computer science scholarships

RELEASED: May 12, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation has received $10,000 from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation to fund scholarships for computer science students at UW-Eau Claire.

The Northwestern Mutual Computer Science Scholarship will be awarded during the 2011-12 academic year.

"At $5,000 each, the scholarships from Northwestern Mutual have the potential to make a significant impact on students' education, allowing them to focus more on school and less on part-time jobs," said Dr. Daniel Stevenson, associate professor in the UW-Eau Claire computer science department and the department's scholarship coordinator. "Preference for these scholarships is given to women and minorities, which also could help increase the numbers in these underrepresented groups in computer science."

The scholarship is part of $1.1 million in grants from Northwestern Mutual to support literacy and access to higher education throughout Wisconsin.

"Supporting programs that improve literacy and make the dream of college a financial reality are critical long-term investments in Wisconsin's future," said Kimberley Goode, Northwestern Mutual Foundation president. "This grant will directly impact our community's ability to unlock the potential of Wisconsin's next generation and advance their development."
