EAU CLAIRE — An Eastern Ukrainian administrator joined the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus community for eight weeks during the spring 2011 semester as part of an international professional development program.

Olena Tupakhina, head of the international office at Zaporizhzhya National University in Zaporizhzhya, Eastern Ukraine, said she applied to the International Research & Exchanges — University Administration Support Program because she admires the U.S. educational system. Tupakhina is the second from her university to receive a UASP grant to visit the U.S. in recent years.

In her position at ZNU, Tupakhina started reforming the university's internationalization strategy using theoretical knowledge and her own study abroad experience. Tupakhina's time at UW-Eau Claire has been spent learning best practices in the management of internationalization for which UW-Eau Claire has been recognized. According to Tupakhina, this includes the resulting high number of U.S. Fulbright fellows, the high percentage of students studying abroad and specific services for international students. Tupakhina will apply what she learns here to improve the process at ZNU.

"I feel very lucky to be hosted by a university so successful in carrying out its global campus strategy," Tupakhina said. "In most universities, you look for internationalization; at UW-Eau Claire, internationalization looks for you, so I've got a lot of ideas for professional development."

Dr. Karl Markgraf, director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for International Education, worked with Tupakhina to review her case study and to provide her with data and advice.

"I think it's a very nice validation of the activity going on here," Markgraf said. "I'm hopeful that it will be of benefit to her university."

Tupakhina will present her study to the IREX committee in Washington D.C., then return home to begin implementing what she's learned.
