Students invited to take English 110 survey to help reshape curriculum

RELEASED: March 28, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are invited to participate in a survey about their experiences in English 110 or English 112. The survey, which can be accessed online, will be available from March 29-April 8.

According to Dr. Shevaun Watson, assistant professor of English and director of composition at UW-Eau Claire, the survey is part of a faculty-student collaborative research project titled "Students' Perceptions of ENGL 110," funded through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The student researchers are sophomore Christina Delapp, Andover, Minn., and junior Michael Jobb, White Bear Lake, Minn.

English 110, known as "Introduction to College Writing," is a foundational university course that is in the process of a major transformation as part of the Blugold Commitment. English 112 is its equivalent for transfer and AP students. The revision, piloting, assessment and rollout of new curriculum will take several years, and student input is sought to help inform this process.

"Since students help to make decisions about Blugold monies and because ENGL 110 touches nearly every student on campus, it is important to collect a large amount of data about students' experiences in the course," Watson said. "It is not the intention of this study to allow students' attitudes to entirely drive the revision of this course, but it seems remiss to not inquire about their perceptions as significant curriculum changes are being contemplated."

More than 2,000 students take one of the college writing courses each year, therefore it's crucial to get a substantial return on these surveys in order to validate the findings, she said.

Findings from the survey will be shared during a presentation at Student Research Day May 2-4.
