Fifth-Grade Tour Day program seeks student mentors

RELEASED: March 28, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The Blugold Beginnings program is looking for student mentors to assist with the Fifth Grade Tour Day that will bring 1,400 youth to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus next month.

About 500 volunteer college mentors are needed as guides for the day and to conduct pre- and post-tour visits at elementary schools. Small groups of fifth-graders are paired with two college mentors for the day. Fifth-graders are encouraged to ask questions about the university, discuss future academic plans and explore what areas on campus they find interesting.

"Serving as a mentor for Tour Day is a great way to positively impact a young person's life, connect with community schools and earn 15 service-learning hours," said Lissa Martinez, Blugold Beginnings program coordinator. All Tour Day mentors receive a T-shirt and lunch each day.

Training is provided and required to participate. Training dates are listed on the Blugold Beginnings mentor page. Those interested in serving as college mentors for Tour Day 2011 must complete the mentor registration form.

For more information about community, faculty and staff volunteer opportunities for the April 20-21 Fifth-Grade Tour Day, visit the Blugold Beginnings website or contact Lissa Martinez at 715-836-3651 or martinlj@uwec.edu.
