EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a guest artist recital featuring the Calliope Flute and Piano Duo at 7:30 p.m. April 5 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Dr. Elizabeth McNutt, flute, and Dr. Shannon Wettstein, piano, formed the Calliope Duo in 1999 while attending the University of California, San Diego, where they both earned doctorates in contemporary music performance practice. The duo focuses on innovative, recently composed music.

Wettstein has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and internationally. She is the pianist for the internationally acclaimed contemporary music ensemble Zeitgeist and has collaborated with many well-known composers. She typically premieres more than 60 new works per year.

A virtuoso flutist, McNutt has a passion for new and adventurous music. She has commissioned and premiered countless new works and has become an expert interpreter of the masterpieces of the last century. Besides her ongoing collaborations with young and upcoming composers, McNutt has worked with such notables as Pierre Boulez, Harvey Sollberger, Roger Reynolds, Joji Yuasa and Joan Tower.

Dr. Ethan Wickman, assistant professor of music at UW-Eau Claire, has worked with Wettstein in the past and looks forward to a fantastic program.

"I am excited the Calliope Duo is coming because they really do represent the cutting edge of new art music performance," Wickman said.

McNutt and Wettstein will present pieces from the mid-20th to the 21st century. The concert will consist of 14 pieces, 10 of which were composed in the last two years.

The event is free and open to the public.
