Community and alumni volunteers needed
for fifth-grade tour day in April

RELEASED: March 17, 2011

Blugold Beginnings logoEAU CLAIRE — The Blugold Beginnings program is looking for community volunteers to assist with a two-day program that will bring 1,400 fifth-graders to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus next month.

Students from Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Altoona and Arcadia schools will be on campus April 20-21 as part of the Blugold Beginnings Fifth-Grade Tour Day.

Blugold Beginnings is a precollege access program that pairs UW-Eau Claire student mentors with youth in area schools. The program aims to inform and inspire underrepresented students about higher education and how it is attainable for them, said Lissa Martinez, Blugold Beginnings program coordinator.

"Fifth-Grade Tour Day allows students to visit the UW-Eau Claire campus, helping them to feel comfortable in a university setting," Martinez said. "Students have the opportunity to explore campus and experience class demonstrations created just for them. We're asking the community to help us make them feel welcome on our campus."

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day to help participants feel welcome and make sure they are learning and enjoying themselves. Shifts from 9-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. also are available. Complimentary T-shirts and lunch will be provided. Training is scheduled for 5-6 p.m. April 12 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center.

To volunteer, please fill out the online registration form or print and fax the printable form to 715-836-3245. For more information about volunteer opportunities for the April 20-21 Fifth-Grade Tour Day, contact Lissa Martinez at 715-836-3651 or martinlj@uwec.edu.
