Lessons about energy for kids set for March 23

RELEASED: March 15, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host "Spring Break Energy Lessons" for children March 23. The program is led by the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group's Energy Service Corps.

The lessons will give children the opportunity to learn about the presence of energy in their lives. There will be two programs, both held on the second-floor breezeway of McIntyre Library.

The morning session, "Evidence of Energy," will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and is intended for preschoolers ages 3-5. There will be hands-on activities to help children learn about energy and where it can be found.

The afternoon session, "Electric Charades," will be held from 2-3 p.m. and is intended for school-age children. Participants will act out the flow of electricity using everyday objects to learn how energy is conducted.

Martha Munger, of the Clear Vision Sustainability Task Force in Eau Claire, will be a special guest. Munger will briefly discuss the importance of energy in her line of work, as well as in our lives, and will also be available to assist during the lessons.

Angela Koenig, the UW-Eau Claire Energy Service Corps campus organizer, described Energy Service Corps as "a service organization focused on educating and engaging the community about energy efficiency."

According to Koenig, this is the first time an Energy Education Week is being held in Wisconsin, one of only four states in which Energy Service Corps is currently located.

The programs are free and open to the public. Preregistration for planning purposes is requested. Parking permits are available by calling the UW-Eau Claire Visitor Center at 715-836-2544.

For more information or to preregister, contact Kati Tvaruzka at 715-836-4522 or tvaruzke@uwec.edu by March 18.
