Musical events for the week of March 13

RELEASED: March 9, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning March 13. All events are free and open to the public.

Sunday, March 13:

  • Senior Shane Capaul, Mayer, Minn., will present a capstone dance recital highlighting his accomplishments in choreography and dance at 2 p.m. in Kjer Theatre. The performance, "em[body]ment of the soul," will include eight pieces ranging from modern to contemporary to upbeat jazz. The show is choreographed by Capaul, who will be assisted by fellow dance students.

Monday, March 14:

  • Junior Daniel Bader, Green Bay, trumpet; and sophomore Scott Hensiak, Muskego, alto saxophone; will present a joint recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will feature pieces by Alexander Glazunov, Eugène Bozza and Freddie Hubbard. Freshman Sandra Bader and senior Greg Ellis will provide piano accompaniment.

  • Andre Gaskins and Eli Kalman will perform a guest artist recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will feature pieces by Robert Schumann, G.F. Handel and Johannes Brahms. Gaskins, a cellist, currently serves as director of orchestral activities and cello at UW-Oshkosh. Kalman, a pianist, is currently a member of the music faculty at UW-Oshkosh. See separate news release about this event.

Tuesday, March 15

  • A student piano recital will be performed by junior Weston Thier, Bayfield, at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The recital will feature pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Frédéric Chopin.

  • A joint student voice area recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Vocal students from UW-Eau Claire will perform "Italian Songs," featuring works by Rossini, Giordani and Handel.

Wednesday, March 16

  • A student clarinet recital will be performed by junior Megan Pattarozzi, Middleton, at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. She will be accompanied by Roger Bethard on piano.

  • The Composition Studio of Dr. Ethan Wickman, assistant professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The students will perform original compositions by senior Alyssa Rae Severson, Eau Claire, sophomore Andy Steffen, New Richmond, senior Philip Reilly, Milton, senior Gregory Ellis, Waukesha, senior Jennifer Newton, Stillwater, Minn., junior David Sumner, Fall Creek, and senior Ben Hase, Wausau.

  • The Phi Mu Alpha recital will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. It will feature music by J.S. Smith and Aaron Copland.

Thursday, March 17

  • Dr. Owen Lovell, assistant professor of music, will perform a faculty piano recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. The program will feature works by Franz Peter, Randall Bauer and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Lovell teaches applied piano lessons and class piano at UW-Eau Claire. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and a doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of Texas at Austin.
