Art & design students gain 24-hour access to Haas Fine Arts Center

RELEASED: March 7, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Art & design students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire can now pull all-nighters in the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The "Haas Fine Arts After-Hours Project" grants 24-hour access to certain classrooms and studios for students enrolled in studio art courses. The following security precautions have been taken:

  • A university ID is required for entry into the building.
  • Punch pad locks are required for entry into any room with sensitive equipment or materials.
  • Rooms with hazardous equipment (a kiln or welding tools, for example) will remain locked at night.
  • Students must sign a liability and regulation agreement to be authorized to use the building after hours.
  • Students may not access areas of the building outside the art & design wing.

UW-Eau Claire student Matt Sias, Hudson, a senior information systems major and director of the Student Senate Information Technology Commission, spearheaded the initiative for increased student access to the Haas Fine Arts Center. Responses to a survey of art & design students before the initiation of the project showed strong interest in 24-hour access.

The project was officially completed Feb. 2. For additional information, contact Matt Sias at siasmj@uwec.edu.
