'Be a Hero' Week set for Feb. 28-March 7

RELEASED: March 1, 2011

'Be a Hero Week' graphicEAU CLAIRE — Six student groups are participating in "Be a Hero" Week Feb. 28-March 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. A challenge to students to come together and do something for the community, the event is being held in conjunction with The Forum presentation by Michael Uslan, executive producer of the "Batman" movie franchise. Uslan will speak March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

"I have loved Batman since I was an 8-year-old boy," Uslan has said, "because he has no superpowers. His greatest superpower is his humanity. You are Batman."

Responding to this message, six student groups have submitted ideas for "Be a Hero" Week:

Step by Step for Shoes: through March 7. Latin American Sustainability, Education and Development will be collecting new or gently used shoes to send to Latin America during the entire week. The student organization raises awareness about Latin American issues related to social progress, health and economic development, and sponsors events that support sustainable educational and developmental projects in Latin America. Shoes will be given to individuals who can't otherwise afford them, to protect their feet from hazardous terrain and prevent parasites. Shoes may be donated at the Student Organizations Complex, Davies Center 132; the department of foreign languages, Hibbard Hall 378; Bridgman Hall, Room 309; and in Davies Center's east lobby (March 4 only).

Random Acts of Thank You: March 1, east lobby, Davies Center. The Student Philanthropy Organization invites people to stop by and write a thank you note to a person who has given something to the university — or to thank a teacher, friend, cafeteria worker or anyone else you'd like to recognize with a Random Act of Thank You.

Spread the Word to End the Word: March 2, Council Fire Room, Davies Center, 7:30 p.m. Best Buddies and Special Olympics have organized this benefit concert to raise consciousness about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word "retard(ed)" and to encourage people to pledge to stop using the R-word. The music of UW-Eau Claire ensembles and others will be featured. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center, 715-836-3727.

Heart Warming Cards for Seniors: March 3, 8-10 p.m. Join the women of Katharine Thomas Hall's 2 East wing to make cards for the residents of the Clairemont Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Are You Smarter than a Greek Member?: March 5, Council Fire Room, Davies Center, 6:30-10:30 p.m. Members of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity have organized this challenge, offering free popcorn, prizes and a 50-50 raffle to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Superhero Dance Party: March 5, Higherground, 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Higherground, the student-run nightclub in Crest Wellness Center, invites people to bring a nonperishable food item for a local food pantry and come in superhero attire for this dance party. Admission is free.

More information about "Be a Hero" Week is available through the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center 133 or by calling 715-836-2787.
